An EDA Specialist in Periodontics must demonstrate the following thorough knowledge.

In-depth and advanced knowledge for dental practice in the field of periodontics as well as critical evaluation of specialist literature. Complete interdisciplinary planning and implementation of treatment. Proof of continuing professional development and recertification after 5 years.

  • Biology of the periodontium and oral tissues
    (anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology, inflammation and wound healing)
  • Aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal lesions
  • Pathology of mucosal lesions and lesions of other adjacent structures
  • Epidemiology of periodontal diseases, index systems
  • Influential factors in aetiology
  • Occlusion-related lesions, basic functional knowledge
  • Complex treatment planning, identifying and assessing at-risk patients and implications for planning and treatment
  • Periodontal prophylaxis and initial periodontal therapy to create a biologically acceptable surface
  • Further periodontal therapy, regenerative, resective and mucogingival therapy
  • Drug therapy
  • Maintenance therapy
  • Interrelation of periodontal disease and whole body

EDA Specialists in Periodontics shall document their special commitment to the field of periodontics by:

  • active involvement in CPD courses and scientific symposia,
  • scientific papers within the bounds of possibility,
  • acting as a speaker or trainer in their specialist field,
  • active involvement in basic and further training of specialist dental nurses, dental assistants and dental hygienists,
  • work on the Board and on committees of the EDA and in the examination boards.
