Specialists in Implantology (EDA)

An EDA Specialist in Implantology must demonstrate the following thorough knowledge.

Principles
In-depth and advanced knowledge for dental practice in the field of implantology as well as critical evaluation of specialist literature.

Range of subjects (not exhaustive)

  • Anatomy and physiology of the orofacial system;
  • Aetiology, pathogenesis and epidemiology of periodontal diseases (only the basics);
  • Basics of histology, immunology, inflammation and wound healing;
  • Identifying and assessing at-risk patients and implications for planning and treatment;
  • Prophylaxis and pre-implantation treatment;
  • Use of medication;
  • Endosteal implants (design, structure, coating);
  • Aetiology, pathogenesis and epidemiology of craniomandibular dysfunctions (basics);
  • Intolerance reactions, allergies;
  • Diagnostic and prognostic methods;
  • Command of a synoptic therapeutic approach (pain treatment, infection control, history-taking, initial examination, diagnosis, pre-implantation diagnostics, treatment planning and treatment procedure);
  • Restorative aspects of implantology (particularly implant and superstructure materials and their biocompatibility, implantation from restorative perspectives, para-implant soft tissues and aesthetics, exposure and restorative treatment, selection of superstructure components, single-tooth implants, purely implant-supported restorations, hybrid constructions, retention of implant-supported restorations, complications with implant-supported dentures, long-term prognosis and clinical evaluation of different modes of treatment);
  • Removable and fixed superstructures;
  • Biocompatibility;
  • Peri-implant soft tissues, biological width;
  • Red and white aesthetics;
  • Purely implant-supported superstructures;
  • Hybrid constructions;
  • Retention of superstructures;
  • Complications;
  • Long-term prognosis and clinical evaluation of modes of treatment;
  • Interim treatment and temporaries;
  • Immediate loading;
  • Late loading;
  • Peri-implantitis;
  • Augmentation methods, tissue regeneration, growth factors;
  • Surgical techniques;
  • Bone replacement materials;
  • Rhinological aspects;
  • Restorative aspects of periodontics (particularly the basics of pre-prosthodontic periodontics, relationship between restoration and periodontal soft tissue, basics of periodontal surgical procedures, basics of mucogingival surgical measures, furcation involvement, augmentation measures in the alveolar ridge region, use of long-term temporaries, re-evaluation of the entire pretreatment);
  • Direct and indirect metallic, plastic, ceramic and similar restorations;
  • Aesthetic aspects of restoration (particularly society and aesthetics, forensic problems, medical indications, dental/aesthetic guidelines, rules and strategies for treatment, white versus red aesthetics, aesthetic materials and biocompatibility, bleaching, veneers, all-ceramic restorations, adhesive bridges, adhesive retention);
  • Occlusal concepts, registration techniques and articulators, concepts and treatment strategies for complete dental rehabilitation (changes in jaw relation, etc.),
  • Complications and psychological aspects in restorative measures.

    Range of operations:
    Implantations and treatments must encompass all classes of indications and be evenly distributed, as far as possible.
    Among implantations, each of the following situations should account for at least 10% of cases:
  • operations close to nerves,
  • sinus lift procedures,
  • surgery for advanced jaw atrophy,
  • hard tissue augmentation and
  • soft tissue augmentation.
